The first Nest was not a kingdom. It was a workbench beside a cold window, crowded with unfinished things. A map with no roads. A song with no final verse. A tiny dragon sketched in the margin of a story that its maker was afraid to share.
Every night the Forgotten Creator returned to the bench. Every night a different doubt followed: someone else had already done it better; no one would notice; perhaps tomorrow. The drawings faded until only one orange mark remained. A little flame, refusing to go out.
That mark opened its eyes. Ember was smaller than the cup beside him, with crooked new wings and a tail that glowed whenever the Creator reached for a pencil. He could not breathe great fire. He could warm cold fingers. It was enough.
Together they finished the map. Where the Creator drew a forest, Ember breathed a warm spark into its roots. Where the Creator drew a home, he curled up at the door. The map became a world, and the workbench became a crossing between worlds: the First Hearth.
But something had watched the unfinished pages for a very long time. Beyond the window lived the Null Regent, a silence that fed on abandoned possibilities. It did not hate creation. It hated the moment a creator realized they did not have to create alone.
One morning the Creator disappeared. The bench remained, scattered with broken instructions and a single message burned gently into the wood: Keep a light for the next one. Ember waited until sunset. Then he gathered the last sparks into his wings and went to find the other Nests.
He still carries a little of that first fire. You can see it when a new idea arrives, or when someone shares an imperfect beginning. Ember does not ask whether it will become famous. He asks whether you would like a buddy while you make it.
